Long Branch, the Jersey Shore resort, is the setting that distinguishes this glass negative from the other horse pictures on the board. The town was a fashionable summer destination from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, and President Ulysses S. Grant spent several summers there in the 1870s, so its social calendar drew wealthy visitors who filled the grounds for events like this. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news and feature photographs, produced many such images for newspapers and magazines. The record's title comes from unverified notes, and no date is recorded, so the exact show remains uncertain.
