Long Branch, the New Jersey shore resort, is the setting for this scene of riders on horseback at a Society Circus, a kind of amateur show staged by wealthy summer residents for charity and amusement. Horse acts were a staple of these events, and the photographer's attention to the riders reflects how central such displays were to the resort's social calendar. The glass negative comes from George Grantham Bain, whose Bain News Service supplied news pictures to newspapers in New York and beyond in the early twentieth century. The title and date, 8/14/09, come from caption information the service recorded and that has not been independently verified, so the precise occasion should be read with that caveat in mind.
