Long Branch, the seaside resort town on the New Jersey coast, gives this glass negative its title, which the Bain News Service recorded as a horse show. The town drew wealthy summer visitors for decades, and its social calendar included equestrian events that brought riders, grooms and spectators to the grounds. George Grantham Bain's agency, a New York news photography business in the early twentieth century, sold pictures like this one to newspapers, so the image shows a fashionable crowd and the animals at the center of the competition. The date is not recorded, and the title comes from Bain's own unverified data, so the scene is best read as a typical seasonal gathering of that era.
