Spectators fill a viewing stand in this May 1908 scene from a New York City Work Horse Parade, a procession of the draft and delivery horses that still hauled most of the city's freight. In 1908 horses remained essential to commerce, even as motor trucks and automobiles were beginning to appear on city streets. The parades rewarded well-kept animals and drew attention to their care, so the crowd in the stand is as much a part of the story as the horses. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures from the period, though the caption details are unverified.
