In May 1908, a horse hitched to a delivery wagon took part in a Work Horse Parade in New York City, a event that set out to honor the animals that hauled goods and carried people through the city's streets. Such parades were organized to show that working horses deserved good care, and entrants were judged on how well their animals were groomed, harnessed, and kept. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news pictures taken in New York in the early 1900s, when horse-drawn vehicles still did much of the city's hauling. The wagon and its harness show the everyday equipment of that trade.
