A harnessed horse drinks from a bucket held by a man in this New York City view, one of the many street scenes in the George Grantham Bain Collection. Bain's news service made and sold photographs of city life from the early 1900s until the 1910s, when horses still did much of the work on city streets for deliveries, carting and hauling. Water for working horses was a common sight then, and the image records an everyday task that was soon to fade as motor vehicles spread. The date is approximate, and the caption is based on old card data, so the exact location and circumstances are not confirmed.
