Streetcar No. 148 is a horse-drawn car on a New York City line, dated around 1895, when animal power still carried much of the city's rail traffic. Horses pulled these cars along iron rails laid in the street, and a driver and conductor worked each car through crowded traffic. Within a decade, electric and cable systems had replaced most horse lines, so pictures like this one record a transportation method that was passing out of use. The record's details are unverified, so the exact route and date should be checked against other sources.
