Horse-drawn carriages were once a common sight along the park drives of Central Park, and this glass negative captures that routine city scene. It comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of pictures made by the Bain News Service, a wire photo agency that supplied images to newspapers in New York and beyond in the early twentieth century. The record gives no exact date, and its title comes from caption cards written by the agency rather than from verified information, so the precise year and the particular carriages remain uncertain. Still, the image is worth noticing for its glimpse of how people traveled and took leisure in the park before automobiles crowded out most of the horses.
