A horse collapsed in the street is the subject of this print, which the Library of Congress holds as part of the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs taken in New York City in the early 1900s. The caption card, transcribed from old records, gives the title "Horse overcome by heat" and dates the picture to about 1910. Bain's photographers worked for the wire services and newspapers of the day, so scenes like this one were often made to document everyday city life. Street horses pulling carts, wagons and streetcars were common then, and heat stroke among them was a real and frequent hazard, which makes the picture a useful record of working conditions on city streets.
