The caption places Ulysses S. Grant on horseback in a New York funeral procession for a Governor Clinton, but the record's 1908 date does not fit that account, since Grant died in 1885 and the Bain News Service worked mainly in the early twentieth century. The title comes from unverified notes made at the time, so the identification of both the rider and the occasion is uncertain. The glass negative still shows how formal city funerals of that era were staged, with mounted escorts and crowds lining the route. Its subject is the horse and rider at the center of the procession.
