Street traffic moves past the New York Custom House at Bowling Green in lower Manhattan, where motor cars, horse-drawn wagons and streetcars share the same roadway. Cass Gilbert's granite Beaux-Arts federal building was completed in 1907, so the mix of vehicles points to roughly the first decades of the twentieth century, when automobiles were spreading through city streets alongside older forms of transport. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year is uncertain, but the scene shows the transition in urban transportation as horses and motors competed for the same space.
