Nine horse-drawn carriages are arranged together on this plate, which makes it easy to compare their bodies, wheels, and frames side by side. The caption is simply "Carriages," the kind of plain label used on reference sheets that showed buyers and makers the range of vehicle types available before the automobile. It sits on a board of automobile pictures for good reason: early motorcars borrowed much of their basic construction, including the body on a frame and the spoked wheels, from the carriage trade they gradually replaced.
