Here, a German staff car carrying officers moves past a long column of horse-drawn wagons, while foot soldiers march along the verge. The contrast captures a central fact of the First World War: Germany's armies depended heavily on horses and wagons to move supplies, even as motor vehicles began to appear, mostly for senior officers and command duties. Such convoys were the lifeblood of the front, carrying ammunition, food, and equipment along roads often churned by traffic. The Library of Congress dates the print only to the years 1914 to 1918, and its descriptive title was devised by staff, so the exact location and date remain uncertain.
