Stamped with the Compagnie de l'Esthétique Industrielle's address on Avenue d'Iéna in Paris and dated March 22, 1961, this front view from the driver's side shows the Avanti at the sketch stage. The firm was the Paris office of industrial designer Raymond Loewy, whose studio shaped the car for Studebaker. The colored fluid marker lets the designer study the proportions and the distinctive nose before the design was settled. Studebaker introduced the Avanti in 1962 as a sporty coupe with a fiberglass body, and it remains a well-known example of early 1960s American styling.
