Stamped with the name of Compagnie de l'Esthétique Industrielle and a Paris address on Avenue d'Iéna, this color sketch shows the Studebaker Avanti seen from the driver's side. The firm was Raymond Loewy's design studio, which handled Studebaker's styling work, and the stamped date of March 1961 places the drawing at the start of the Avanti's development. Designers of the period often worked quickly in fluid marker, so the loose, confident lines capture ideas in motion. The Avanti went on sale as a 1963 model in 1962 and is remembered for its clean, low-slung body and its fiberglass construction.
