A stamp on the paper ties this sheet to Compagnie de l'Esthétique Industrielle, the Paris design studio of Raymond Loewy, and dates it to late March 1961. The drawing shows the Avanti from the driver's side, rendered in colored fluid marker, a quick presentation medium that let designers judge proportion and surface before a model was built. The Avanti was Studebaker's sporty coupe, introduced for the 1963 model year, with a fiberglass body and a low, sharply creased profile. Studying the front view shows how the design team handled the grille and the wide, flat hood.
