Roosevelt sits on horseback in uniform between two other riders, in front of a church in San Antonio, Texas, in this 1898 view. That spring the city was the training ground for the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, the regiment known as the Rough Riders, after Roosevelt resigned as assistant secretary of the Navy to join the war with Spain. Its recruits came from ranches, police forces and eastern colleges alike, and they drilled on horseback before sailing for Cuba that summer. The picture, kept in a family scrapbook, records the volunteers during their weeks of preparation in the city.
