Shown from behind rather than in the face-forward pose typical of official portraits, Theodore Roosevelt sits his horse in this print from about 1902, a view that draws the eye to his posture and the animal beneath him. Roosevelt, who became president in 1901 after William McKinley's assassination, was an avid horseman who rode often, including in Rock Creek Park near the White House. The print bears the copyright mark of B.M. Clinedinst, a Washington, D.C., photographer who made many portraits of public figures in this period, and its "No. 6" notation suggests it was one of a numbered series.
