Two riders, possibly hunters, move through an open German landscape in a drawing the record credits to C.F. Lessing and dates to 1834. This photograph reproduces that drawing and carries the blind stamp of the Düsseldorf studio M. Radermacher, Mahler & Photograph, suggesting it was made to circulate among students and collectors of the city's painters. Düsseldorf was a leading center of German landscape painting in the mid-nineteenth century, and reproductions like this one helped carry its artists' work beyond the studio. The hunting subject and the horses make it a useful record of how sporting scenes were pictured in the 1830s.
