Mounted and dressed in a beaded buckskin shirt and leggings, the rider wears two feathers in his hair against a backdrop of rolling hills, a pose typical of Edward S. Curtis's work among the Plains peoples. The Library of Congress record identifies the subject as Sioux, or Dakota, and the picture was used as the frontispiece of volume 3 of Curtis's *The North American Indian*, published in Seattle beginning in 1907. Curtis often posed his subjects in regalia and arranged scenes to evoke an earlier way of life, so the image shows as much about his vision of vanishing traditions as about a single day's events.
