Two mounted Manchu hunters, one raising a spear or arrow and the other drawing a bow, are the subject of this graphite drawing, made sometime between 1860 and 1900. Hunting from horseback was central to Manchu life, both as a source of food and as military training that the Qing dynasty, which had ruled China from 1644, kept up for generations. The drawing comes from the Yudin Collection at the Library of Congress, and its quick pencil lines convey the speed of the riders in motion. Scenes like this reflect how Manchu identity remained closely tied to the horse and the bow long after the conquest.
