Two riders sit their horses above dead buffalo, rifles held across their laps, in a scene that shows how sport hunting on the plains looked around the turn of the century. A caption card with the picture suggests that one of the men is Theodore Roosevelt, but a later pencilled note disputes that identification, so the sitters remain uncertain. Roosevelt was a well-known hunter who wrote often about the West, which helps explain the attribution. By the early 1900s, the bison herds that once covered the plains had been reduced to a small remnant after decades of market and sport hunting.
