Theodore Roosevelt is shown mid-leap, horse and rider airborne over a fence, a moment that captured the vigor his public image leaned on. Roosevelt was a dedicated horseman long before he entered the White House in 1901; he had ranched in the Dakota Badlands in the 1880s and later rode regularly in Washington and at his home in Oyster Bay, New York. Photographs like this one, dated around 1902 and registered for copyright, helped build the picture of a physically active president that the public found appealing. The print belongs to the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division.
