Theodore Roosevelt was a lifelong horseman, and this portrait shows him in the saddle during the years he served as president, when riding was part of his public image as much as his private habit. The print carries the copyright mark of Underwood & Underwood, the Ottawa-based and New York-based stereograph and photography firm that produced large numbers of pictures of public figures in the early twentieth century. Roosevelt's fondness for vigorous outdoor life, from his years on a Dakota ranch to his later hunting trips, made images like this one popular with newspapers and the public. The undated record places the picture somewhere between 1900 and 1910, a decade when mounted portraits helped project an image of physical energy.
