Theodore Roosevelt is shown mounted on a horse, a pose that suited a president who was known for his vigor and his love of the outdoors. The print dates to about 1908, the last full year of his presidency, when he was often photographed in active settings rather than stiff studio portraits. Benjamin Johnston and other studio photographers of the period produced many such images, but this one is credited to the Clinedinst studio, a Washington, D.C., firm known for official portraits of public figures. Because the caption information is unverified, the exact occasion is uncertain, though the image fits the rugged, outdoorsman persona Roosevelt cultivated.
