Theodore Roosevelt is shown on horseback with a rifle, a pose that fits his reputation as an outdoorsman and hunter. The print is a copyrighted work from Underwood & Underwood, the Ossining, New York firm that sold large numbers of stereo views and news photographs in the early 1900s. Roosevelt served as president from 1901 to 1909, and he often promoted an active, rugged image of himself through such pictures. Its date, placed between 1900 and 1910, puts it squarely within the years when he was becoming a national symbol of the vigorous American outdoors.
