A rider in buckskin, gun in hand, sits on horseback and looks out over a herd of buffalo, a scene the caption card ties to bison hunting and frontiersmen. The woodcut was printed as an illustration in an edition of *The Poems of William Cullen Bryant*, on page 129, and its wild, open plains reflect how many eastern readers in the nineteenth century imagined the American frontier. Bryant's poem "The Prairies" had already brought the bison herds of the interior to literary attention. The card gives no date, and its information is unverified, so the year of the engraving and its exact link to a particular poem remain uncertain.
