Arnold Genthe, the German-born photographer who worked in San Francisco and later New York, made this contact print of a man and a woman riding horseback in Japan. Genthe travelled in Japan in the early twentieth century, and his photographs of the country, many taken around the first decade of the 1900s, record everyday scenes and people with an unhurried eye. The caption card carries no date, so the exact year is unknown, but the picture is worth noticing for its pairing of two riders and for how it shows horseback travel as an ordinary part of daily life.
