A woman and a child ride together on horseback while a man walks ahead, leading the animal, all sketched in graphite on the back of a page in a notebook attributed to Emanuel Leutze. Leutze, a German-born painter trained in Düsseldorf, later became known for his large canvas *Washington Crossing the Delaware*, finished in 1851. The record dates the drawing loosely to between 1840 and 1860 and rests partly on an older caption card, so it is best read as a quick study of everyday travel on the roads of that era.
