A single rider on horseback in Peru, rendered in watercolor, puts the horse and its rider at the center of the scene. The picture is dated to the 1830s, a decade when Peru was still working out its politics after independence from Spain in 1821. Lima and the surrounding countryside produced a strong tradition of costumbrista watercolors that recorded local dress, trades, and types of people, and images like this one often served as visual records of daily life for viewers far from the region. Horsemanship carried social weight there, so the rider's posture and equipment can tell you as much about status and place as the landscape does.
