A lone rider on horseback, rendered in watercolor and dated to the 1830s, puts the horse at the center of a Peruvian scene. The decade followed Peru's break from Spain and years of political unrest, and with little else recorded about this man, the rider stands for the many travelers and workers who relied on horses across the Andes and the coast. Watercolors of this kind were often made by visiting artists eager to record local dress and customs for audiences abroad, so the saddle, clothing and landscape are worth a close look.
