This watercolor of a man on horseback from Peru is dated somewhere between 1830 and 1840, a decade shortly after the country won independence from Spain. Painters working in Peru in those years often recorded local types and everyday scenes, and a rider like this one, with his dress and mount, reflects that interest in regional life. Horses of Spanish descent were central to travel, trade and rural work at the time. The saddle, tack and clothing are worth studying for clues about the rider's place and the region he came from.
