Most horse pictures on this board show animals or men in military and sporting settings, but this watercolor, dated between 1830 and 1840, puts a woman on horseback in Peru. Images of this kind belong to the costumbrista tradition, in which artists in Lima and other Andean cities painted local people and customs in everyday dress for a market of foreign travelers and residents. Such pictures record how riding and dress marked social identity in the decade after many South American countries won independence from Spain. Because the record gives only a title and date, the sitter and the painter remain unidentified.
