Few horse pictures on this board show a woman in the saddle, and this watercolor places one on horseback in Peru. The record dates it between 1830 and 1840, a decade when Peru was still young as an independent republic and artists in Lima were turning to everyday local types. Costumbrista painters such as Pancho Fierro recorded such figures in watercolor, often with close attention to dress, saddlery and social standing. The record does not name the artist, so the sheet is best read as a glimpse of daily life in the period.
