A man without legs rides a horse in this view made in Pocatello, Idaho, a railroad town that grew up around the Oregon Short Line in the early 1900s. The record gives the date only as approximate, around 1903, when cameras were common but still bulky enough that a posed outdoor shot took planning. Horseback riding was an everyday skill in that part of the West, so a photograph of a disabled rider was a deliberate record of independence at a time when few accommodations existed for people with amputations. The note "No. 99" suggests the print may belong to a larger numbered series.
