A Tokyo photograph of the Emperor of Japan on horseback, taken by the American firm Underwood & Underwood, places the monarch in the saddle rather than in a formal portrait. The date range falls in the early Showa era, after Hirohito succeeded his father in December 1926. Riding was part of the military training expected of Japanese princes, so the picture reflects both personal horsemanship and the public image the imperial household wanted to project. The caption card also lists carriages and tennis, but those tracings are unverified and should be read with caution.
