Maximilian, the Austrian archduke who became Emperor of Mexico, appears here mounted on a horse, a pose that suited a ruler who wanted to look like a soldier and a leader. The card is an albumen print on a carte de visite mount, a format that made portraits cheap enough to trade and collect in the 1850s and 1860s. This example comes from an album of images tied to his reign, a period shaped by the French military intervention in Mexico from 1861 to 1867. Maximilian was installed as emperor in 1864 and was executed in 1867 after French troops withdrew and Mexican republican forces prevailed.
