Hirohito sits on horseback, facing left and returning a salute while Japanese officers ride beside him before the troops. The record gives both northern China and the Yoyogi parade ground, a large military drill field in Tokyo, so the setting is best read with some caution. In 1933, after Japan's seizure of Manchuria, the army was pressing deeper into northern China, and images like this one tied the emperor closely to the country's military ambitions.
