Here Theodore Roosevelt is caught mid-leap over a fence, facing right, in a moment that shows the horsemanship he practiced for most of his life. Roosevelt was a dedicated rider, and during his presidency, which began in 1901, he regularly rode in the parks and countryside around Washington. The photograph carries the imprint of Clinedinst, a Washington, D.C., studio that made many portraits of the president. An action shot like this offered a more vigorous picture of him than the formal studio portraits that were more common at the time.
