A lone cowboy sits astride his horse, turned to the right, in this color lithograph by Frederic Remington. It was reproduced from one of his pastel drawings and published in 1901 as an illustration for *A Bunch of Buckskins*. By then Remington was among the best-known painters and illustrators of the American West, and he made his reputation with scenes of ranch work, cavalry and frontier life. Prints like this one carried his cowboy and horse imagery to magazine and book readers who would never see the original pastel.
