Set in Arizona, this picture shows a cowboy, one of the Western subjects Frederic Remington returned to throughout his career. It is a color lithograph made from one of his pastel drawings and was reproduced in *A Bunch of Buckskins*, a 1901 book of eight of his pastels published in New York by R.H. Russell. Remington recorded the vanishing frontier for eastern readers, and these reproductions carried his cowboy imagery to a wide audience. The soft, chalky texture of pastel is worth noticing, since printmakers of the period had to translate it into inked tones.
