Horseshoe pitching, rather than the horses the board suggests, is the focus of this March 1942 scene from the annual field day of a Farm Security Administration farmworkers community in Yuma, Arizona. The FSA built camps and communities for migrant and seasonal farm laborers during the Depression, and events like this gave families a chance to gather, socialize and compete in friendly contests. The picture survives as a nitrate negative, a fragile early film base, and it offers a rare glimpse of everyday recreation in a community often described only in terms of labor.
