A horse being walked up and down in front of a row of prospective buyers gives this scene its focus: a farm sale in Pettis County, Missouri, in November 1939. Such sales were a regular part of rural life in the late 1930s, when families who had lost land or equipment to hard times sold off their stock and tools at auction, and a horse was often among the most valuable items on offer. The photograph was made on 35 mm nitrate film for the Farm Security Administration, whose photographers documented conditions in the American countryside during the Depression. Its later transfer to the Office of War Information's Overseas Picture Division in 1944 shows how these negatives were reused.
