Riders and horses circle a show ring before a grandstand in this 1908 view of the Plainfield Horse Show, preserved as a glass negative in the George Grantham Bain Collection. Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, made and sold pictures like this one to newspapers and magazines. Horse shows of the period drew large crowds and were popular social events, so the grandstand hints at the spectators who came to watch. The title comes from notes the agency wrote on the negatives, which have not been independently verified.
