A hurdle jumper named "Centennial," entered by Westchester Farms, is the subject of this 1908 glass negative from a Plainfield horse show. The photograph catches the horse at the moment of clearing the obstacle, the kind of contest that drew large crowds to early twentieth-century horse shows. Hurdle and jumping classes tested both the horse's athleticism and the rider's skill, and winning ribbons carried real prestige among breeders and stables. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold pictures to newspapers. The title comes from the original caption data, which the Library of Congress lists as unverified.
