Horses and drivers stand in a line before the judges at this Plainfield horse show, with the animals' bearing and harness on display as closely as their pace. The glass negative is dated June 5, 1908, and comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency whose photographs covered news and society events in the early 1900s. Shows like this drew carriage owners and spectators, and the pictures document a world of horse-drawn driving just before the automobile reshaped it. The Plainfield title comes from agency caption data and has not been independently verified.
