Few places in the Bluegrass region are as closely tied to Thoroughbred racing as Calumet Farm, the Lexington property of Warren Wright, whose baking-powder fortune financed one of the most successful breeding operations of its era. This c1939 print, made by the Louisville studio Caufield & Shook, shows horses on the grounds a few years before the farm's Whirlaway won the Triple Crown in 1941. Commercial studios like Caufield & Shook photographed Kentucky horse farms for owners and publications, so the picture offers a glimpse of how these estates presented themselves before World War II.
