Horses were central to Plains life by the time Carl Bodmer reached the upper Missouri, and this scene shows young riders racing near Fort Pierre, a fur trade post in what is now South Dakota. Bodmer, a Swiss artist, traveled with Prince Maximilian of Wied from 1832 to 1834 and recorded the Dakota people and their surroundings with unusual care. The image was engraved for publication, so it reflects a European audience's view of the region. Its record gives only a broad date range, but the print belongs to the illustrated travel literature that spread images of the American West in the mid-1800s.
