Taken near Culpeper, Virginia, in September 1863, this group portrait shows the officers of a horse artillery brigade attached to the Army of the Potomac. Horse artillery was built for speed: its guns and caissons were pulled by teams of horses so batteries could keep pace with cavalry and reach the front quickly, which makes the animals and harness as central to the story as the men. Culpeper was a major Army of the Potomac base that year, and the officers' formal poses and equipment reflect a force still reorganizing after the summer campaigns.
