Forest officers ride out with a tool box for fighting fires, a scene that shows how firefighting crews traveled in the Arapaho National Forest in Colorado, though the record marks that location with a question mark. In the early twentieth century the Forest Service was still new, and wildfire was among the most pressing concerns across the western forest reserves. Before motor vehicles reached remote ranges, horses carried men and their tools over rough mountain trails, so a rider with a box of shovels and mattocks could reach a blaze far from the nearest road. The National Photo Company, known for its views of the West, made the print, catalogued as number 3350.
